The following research projects were active in the year 1996:
Žorsteinn Sęmundsson

Magnetic Observatory
Operation of the Leirvogur Magnetic Observatory where
changes of the earth's magnetic field are continuously
recorded. Digital data are sent on a daily and monthly
basis to World Data Centres. These data are used for
various researches in solar-terrestrial relations and for
creating models of the earth's magnetic field. They also
provide information on changes in declination for
navigational purposes.

Auroral Research
Cooperation in the running of three auroral observatories established in
Iceland by the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo.
The stations are at Augastadir in W-Iceland, Aedey in
NW-Iceland and Manarbakki in NE-Iceland. The equipment
includes auroral video cameras, photometers, magnetometers,
riometers and ELF-VLF radio receivers.

University Almanac
The preparation and distribution of the Icelandic Almanac
published yearly by the University of Iceland. This almanac,
first published in 1837, is the only one in Iceland providing
astronomical data for the general reader. The editor also
handles numerous requests for information from publishers
of other almanacs and the general public.

Terminological work
Member of the Terminological Committee of the Icelandic
Society for Information Processing. The Committee, which
meets once or twice a week, has published two editions
of a Dictionary of Computing Terms. A third edition
is due to appear in 1997. - Chairman of the Terminological
Committee of the Icelandic Astronomical Society. The Committee,
which was established in 1990, produced a Dictionary of
Astronomical Terms in 1996.
