Foreword

The Annual Report of the Science Institute of the University of Iceland appears now after being dormant for a while. The purpose of the Institute is to carry out research in physics, geophysics, chemistry, geology, numerical analysis, computer science and mathematics.

The staff of the Institute also carry out applied research in collaboration with others and provide service in areas where expertise is lacking outside the Institute.

In this report one can find a short description of the main research projects that were active in 1996 and a list of articles, books, reports and presentations of the staff. The report also contains information about the budget, external funding and number of employees.

If anybody is interested in obtaining further information about any research project, then the Heads of Divisions as well as individual staff members are always pleased to be of service.

Eggert Briem

Chairman of the Board of the Science Institute
