I extended my M.Sc research, which is the first of its kind in Iceland, in 1998 when I edited and wrote an introduction to a book, which the Icelandic Literary Society published. The book contains three articles written by an Icelandic geologist, Thorvaldur Thoroddsen (1855-1921), and published between 1887-89. The articles are a very detailed and accurate abstract from Charles Darwin's sixth edition of The Origin of Species. I wrote numerous explanatory footnotes to the text. Until 2004 this text was the closest Icelanders had to a translation of The Origin. In the introduction, which I based partly on my thesis, I describe, among other things, in detail the development of Thoroddsen's thought. A major change occurred in his world-view between 1903-09 when he changed from being a liberal evolutionist to become a highly conservative anti-evolutionist. This transition came about to a some extent through influences from the holistic movement in Germany at the turn of the century, but also because of developments in his personal and professional life.
