University of
Iceland, 1977-1980. B.Sc. in Geology 1980.
Awards
In August
2010, The International Association of GeoChemistry presented the IAGC
Certificate of Recognition to Sigurdur Gíslason, University of Iceland for
insightful research on basalt weathering and its importance in the long-term
carbon cycle, and for serving IAGC as leader of the IAGC Working Group on
Geochemistry of the Earth’s Surface.
Present
position
A research
professor and chairman of the aquatic geochemistry group at the University of
Iceland's Institute of Earth Sciences, where he studies water/rock, water/air
and water/biomass interactions by field and laboratory experimental studies.
Gíslason´s currently serves on the editorial board of Chemical Geology, the
journal and the European Association for Geochemistry, has been a member of the
association's board of directors, and is a former chairman of The Geochemistry
of The Earth Surface (GES), a working group of the International Association of
GeoChemistry. He is the chairman of the Scientific Steering Committee for the
carbon sequestering in basaltic rocks initiative; Carb-fix (carbfix.com).
Gíslason’s
major scientific contributions are 1) measurement of the dissolution rates and
dissolution mechanisms of volcanic glasses as a function of glass composition,
aqueous solution composition and temperature, 2) quantifying the
chemical/physical erosion rates of basaltic terrains and their contribution to
the global carbon cycle and 3) measuring the environmental effects of volcanic
eruptions.
Gíslason has
managed fifth, sixth and seventh framework EU funded research; FP5 RTN QDPSS,
FP6 RTN MIN-GRO, FP7 ITN DELTA-MIN, FP7-ENERGY-2011-1-283148 CarbFix.
Gíslason has trained three Postdoctoral Fellows and five
PhD Students over the last 10 years and is currently supervising six PhD
students.
He has been external examiner of PhD studies at Yale USA,
Stockholm Sweden, Toulouse France, Open University UK, Aberdeen Scotland, Madrid
Spain, Oslo Norway, Southampton UK.
Gíslason has
served on the Goldschmidt award committee and the Geochemical Fellows committee
of the Geochemical Society and the Houtermans- and
Urey-
medal committee of the European Association for Geochemistry.
Gíslason has
organized international conferences in Crete Greece 1998, Reykjavík Iceland in
1999, Granada Spain in 2000, Reykjavík Iceland in 2009.
