THE SCIENCE INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF ICELAND |

The Science Institute of the University in Iceland has been active in geophysical research since it was founded in 1966, and geophysics became an independent division of the Institute in 1982. The personnel of the Geophysics Division includes two of the teaching staff of the Physics Department of the University, six research scientists and three permanent technicians. Several other scientists, engineers and research assistants are employed at the Division and most of those positions are funded through grants, collaborative projects or consulting work. The research projects of the Geophysics Division reflect the unique geographical and geological position of Iceland, especially with regard to its active volcanism, tectonics and glaciers. Research projects are concentrated in tectonics, volcanism, glaciology and geomagnetism. Research in Glaciology includes mesurements of ice cap surface and bedrock topography, glacier mass balance, hydrology of glacial rivers, surges and other glacier movements, glacier-volcano interaction, meterological observations, energy balance, climate effects and other related topics.
