The peak discharge was reached at 6 a.m. on 17 August with a maximum flow of 2200 m3/s. During that time the water filled all the space underneath the bridge. The greatest depth was 4.9 meter with the water reaching above the bridge pier. The main part of the outburst flow came down from beneath the glacier at Eystrafjall but as soon as the burst was over this area dried up completely. A few icebergs broke apart from the glacier and reached the area west of mount Lómagnjúpur, the largest ones that came down to the bridge were about 1.3 to 1.7 m in diameter. The river Súla comes from beneath the glacier Skeidarájökull just a few kilometers away from Eystrafjall at the same place for many years now. There was a great increase in the flow rate but no real change in the river bed. The jökulhlaup did not reach river Gígja. It was over on 18 August at 6 a.m. All August and September there seemed to be a steady outflow out of lake Grænalón.
