Mathematics seminar - Spring semester 2011

Mathematics seminar takes place on Mondays at 15:00 in room 157 in VR II

Tony Carbery, University of Edinburgh
title: The Multilinear Kakeya Phenomenon

Abstract: We survey various aspects of the multilinear Kakeya phenomenon: how it relates to the classical Kakeya problem, its connections with other areas of mathematics including discrete geometry, algebraic topology, PDEs, probability, complex variables, geometric measure theory, combinatorial optimisation and multilinear functional analysis. We discuss known results and open problems in the area.

Note that the topic of this talk is close to the topic of my (Stefán I. Valdimarsson) talk last week but this one will most likely be much more interesting. Also, note that it is not a requirement to have heard my talk to listen to this one.

Stefán Ingi Valdimarsson, University of Iceland
Title: Multilinear operators and convex programming

Abstract: We will discuss the connexion between the multilinear Kakeya inequality and a convex programming problem. Guth was the first to demonstrate this connextion but subsequently it has been discovered that the connexion is stronger than first appears. The talk is based on joint work of Tony Carbery from the University of Edinburgh and the speaker.
