Multispecies modelling for the Barents Sea started in the early 1980s. The initial focus was on cod-capelin interactions, but later also herring and marine mammals have been included in the multispecies models for this area. A number of different models have been used (CAPSEX, MULTSPEC, AGGMULT, MSVPA, Bifrost, Gadget). A cornerstone in the modelling work has been the joint Norwegian-Russian stomach content data base, which contains data from 1984 onwards, on average about 9000 cod stomachs per year as well as some data for other predators. Predation by cod on capelin, haddock and cod (cannibalism) has been included in the models used in the annual assessments for those stocks. In this paper the multispecies modelling approaches used for the Barents Sea are reviewed, and some modelling issues, e.g. spatial structure of models and use of stomach content data, are discussed in more detail.
